Since TAFL Center is directly affiliated with Alexandria University – which is a public university - we can provide all our students with residency permits. While securing a touristic visa for any US | Canadian | UK | EU passport holder upon arrival at Cairo or Borg El Arab International Airports is generally simple, getting a Residency Visa requires patience, coordination and attention to deadlines. No worries! Our TAFL Center representative at the passport office will accompany you in this multi-step process. Procedures for Obtaining the Residency Visa
- You must have a valid passport for six months beyond your arrival date. If not, then you need to renew your passport at least three months before your departure date. - You must be registered for at least one semester. - If you are a private student, you must have paid the tuition fees. - Please note that the length of stay is related to the registration period i.e., if the student paid the full academic year expenses, a residency will be issued for 8 months. If the student pays half a year, a stay is issued for 4 months until the rest of the fees are paid.
- Upon your arrival, you will receive an email with the exact date and time to meet with the Visa staff member at TAFL. - Students are required to bring three personal passport-sized photos: size 4 × 6. - Students are required to submit the passport and leave it for (24 hours) to apply for the residency. - Students are required to re-submit the passport and leave it for (24 hours) upon arrival of the residence for it to be put into effect.
- Residency fees (for one or two semesters). - College student card. - Bibliotheca Alexandrina membership card. - Administrative expenses for the transportation of the employee in charge of the process of the residency (Students must go to the Passports Administration premises him/herself for the digital photography).
Although the TAFL Center and the College Administration have no authority over the administration of passports (The Passports Administration may increase the fees without prior notice, and it is not possible to know in advance the duration of the security survey since it varies from one person to another), our staff members will help you through the process to avoid any issues or misunderstandings. - We help students applying - Accompany you during your visit to the Visa office to avoid the long queues - Follow-up on a weekly basis. - Inform you upon arrival of the residency. - Put the student residency status into effect. - If the student intends to travel during the semester outside the country, please notify the Center's administration through a written email, two weeks before your departure date, as long you have not received residency yet, to avoid paying a fine upon departure. - Please note that the management of the center will not be able to issue a college student card in case the student wishes to renew the tourist visa.
TAFL can arrange airport transport for interested students who would like a safe drive with a professional driver to meet them at the airport, at any hour, day or night. This service is free. All you need is to choose the option “need a pickup car” in the registration form and send your itinerary confirmation within 2 weeks of your actual arrival date. You will then receive a confirmation email from TAFL. Upon your arrival, a TAFL staff will be waiting for you outside the arrival gate with the TAFL logo. Make sure to have cash to pay the taxi driver directly (35 USD from Alexandria Borg Al Arab Airport or 60 USD from Cairo International Airport).
What sort of housing is for me? How do I find it? Can I get help paying my rent? Do I need a guarantor? A lot of questions come up when you start thinking about where to live while studying at TAFL Center Alexandria University. We do believe that safe, comfortable and nice housing will help our students to better concentrate on their studies and get the maximum benefits of the study-abroad experience.
Here are the options that we advise our students to choose:
Students wishing to refine their Arabic often choose to live with an Egyptian family. It’s a practical and economical solution. You get your own room in an apartment while taking part in Egyptian daily life, sharing delicious homemade meals and enjoying the comfort and facilities of a permanent home. Main risk: watch your calories! This option is easier to provide for female students. Rare are the families who are willing to receive male students for cultural and/or religious reasons. So, if you are a male student and you are keen to live in a host family, you need to share with us this desire at least 2 months before your arrival. Based on consistent feedback that we’ve received from students over the past years, we propose a network of host families that will contribute to our students’ language and cultural learning experiences.
Many students choose to rent an apartment. Those who want to live alone generally ask for a studio (a one-bedroom apartment), which is not the standard accommodation in Egypt. It’s often easier to find large apartments (2 to 3 bedrooms with 1 or 2 bathrooms) to share with other TAFL students. To find notices of apartments offered by the individual property owner, follow these Facebook pages and groups for Foreigners and Francophone in Alexandria:
Similarly, you can check websites like:
- AirbnbAlthough housing is NOT TAFL’s responsibility, it is a free service that we are glad to offer upon your request and with pre-arrival coordination.
The following are among the provisions in the rental agreement:
- The amount of the rent and charges (if charges are assessed).
- The amount of the security deposit. (The security deposit is a sum that your landlord may require you to advance to cover any damage to the property that may occur during your tenancy. The amount is generally equal to a month’s rent (by law, it cannot be higher). The security deposit will be refunded to you if you leave the unit in the same condition in which you found it when you moved in. That’s why you should make sure that the flat is well equipped and that all the equipment is in good condition as well as the furniture. So, while visiting the flat, take your time, inspect the premises and pay particular attention to the bathroom and kitchen utilities.
- The notice period. If you decide to leave your lodging, you must notify your landlord in advance - generally, a month in advance (this also should be written in the rental agreement. For example, if you plan to leave on July 1, you must give notice no later than June 1, and you must do it by written (registered email with a confirmation of receipt or SMS/ WhatsApp message and make sure to get a reply to your message)
- You should be prepared to pay – in cash - the first month’s rent and security deposit upon signing the rental agreement.
